about

I wrote the first few poems in downtown Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I wrote the remaining eight poems from a 28th-floor apartment in Kajang, a town just south of KL. The lyrics are reflections from traveling around the city by foot and taxi, as well as the rest of Peninsular Malaysia by plane and bus.

I visited Johor Bahur and Malacca at the end of December 2022 and January 2023. Then I stayed in Langkawi for a week for the Chinese New Year.

I recorded poems over two nights, Saturday and Sunday, January 28-29. I drank Danish beer and Malaysian whiskey. There were some fireworks in the background.

I mastered each of the tracks with eMastered.com. I'd previously bought a 12-month subscription for $19.99/month. The mastering turned out OK. The poems seem LOUD.

I laughed and did most of the recording of each poem in one take. I left in the screw-ups.

Most people want everything to be perfect all the time. That's not why I write poetry.

If you write a poem a night for a week or two poems a week for a month, you'll get seven or eight poems. A poetry chapbook is about 20-40 pages.

You don't need to write constantly to be a writer or to write poetry. Most people who want to write or create get in their way by seeking or expecting perfection. Thus, they never start -- or they push themselves too hard to be considered an "artist."

I wrote these poems whenever I felt like writing them, and I wrote elsewhere too. I just came up with the idea to do a spoken word record, which should be under an hour long.

I wrote these poems for myself, little greedy wanderings that made me laugh a bit, smile, and move on. I'll keep writing poetry and other shit too.

These poems are OK. They're not GREAT, but they're not too shitty, either.

Most people who write poetry miss the point of being a poet. It means living, cooking, sleeping -- and, in this case, being alone. I wanted to be alone, and I wanted to write poems.

Tomorrow I fly to Bangkok. My last spoken word album was from poems I wrote in Thailand, in a suburb of Bangkok. These poems are better than those poems.

So, that's good.
